Week 0 — AI for Business Leaders: Know What You’re Working With
Before you pick a track, spend one week getting grounded. Not in theory — in the concepts that will make everything else in this plan land faster and stick longer. Week 0 has two goals: understand the key ideas behind AI well enough to stop nodding along, and honestly assess where you stand today.
Key AI Concepts Every Business Leader Should Understand
You don’t need to know how to build a model. You need to know how to think with one — and about one.
Large Language Models (LLMs) — The technology behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. They predict the next most likely word based on patterns learned from vast amounts of text. They don’t “know” things the way you do. They generate. That distinction matters every time you evaluate their output.
Hallucination — When an AI produces something that sounds confident and factual but is simply wrong. It’s not lying — it has no concept of truth. It’s completing a pattern. This is why adversarial testing is built into both tracks.
Prompting — The instructions you give an AI. The quality of what you get out is almost entirely determined by the quality of what you put in. Prompting is a skill, not a search query.
Agents — AI systems that don’t just answer a question but take a sequence of actions to complete a task. An agent can research, draft, review, and iterate — without you steering every step. Both tracks build toward using and evaluating agents.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) — A way of giving an AI access to your specific documents and context so it can answer questions grounded in your actual information, not just its general training. Critical for any business application that requires accuracy.
Context Window — The amount of information an AI can hold and work with at once. Think of it as working memory. Understanding this helps you know why long documents sometimes produce worse results than shorter, focused ones.
Fine-tuning vs. Prompting — Fine-tuning retrains a model on your data; prompting steers an existing model with instructions. Most business use cases don’t need fine-tuning. Most teams that think they do, don’t.
How to Assess Your Current AI Readiness
Before Week 1, answer these questions honestly. There are no right answers — only accurate ones.
Have you personally used an AI tool for real work in the last 30 days?
Not observed it. Not had it demoed. Used it yourself, on a task that mattered. If the answer is no, you’re starting at zero — and that’s fine. That’s what this plan is for.
Can you describe, in plain language, one way AI is currently being used in your organization?
If you can only answer at the level of “the team is exploring it” or “we have a few pilots,” your visibility is too low to lead effectively.
Have you ever caught an AI making a confident mistake?
If not, you haven’t used it critically enough yet. Catching errors is a skill. It needs to be developed deliberately.
Do you know which AI tools your team is using day-to-day?
Shadow AI — tools your team uses without formal approval — is widespread. If you don’t know what’s being used, you don’t know what decisions are being influenced by it.
If your team told you an AI tool “wasn’t ready” for a use case, could you push back from experience?
This is the readiness question that matters most. If the answer is no, both tracks in this plan are designed to change that.
Use your Week 0 answers to choose your track. If your gaps are primarily strategic and conceptual, start with Track B. If your gaps are hands-on and workflow-level, start with Track A. If you’re unsure, start with Track B — the hands-on experience will make Track A land faster when you get there.

The plan identifies two distinct leadership archetypes and meets them where they are.
Track A — AI Strategy Leader: You’re strong at presenting to C-suite. The gap is hands-on depth. You’ve never built anything yourself. That gap is your most significant vulnerability — and the most fixable one.
Track B — Software Leader: You understand systems, APIs, and how software gets built. That foundation is an advantage — but it hasn’t been put to work in AI yet. The gap isn’t conceptual. It’s experiential.
Both tracks converge on the same destination: firsthand experience with AI that cannot be outsourced, delegated, or summarized away.
Track A: Building the Three Skills No One Can Outsource
The goal of Track A is not to make you a software engineer. It’s to develop three capabilities that define whether an AI leader adds or destroys value:
1. Taste & Judgment — Knowing when AI is wrong, overconfident, or hallucinating. Strategy leaders publish AI-assisted documents without human review. If you can’t catch the errors yourself, you’re amplifying your own risk surface.
2. Hands-On Fluency — Building and running AI agents yourself, not through your team. You cannot lead what you cannot do. Credibility in this space is increasingly earned through demonstration, not delegation.
3. Adversarial Thinking — Stress-testing AI output before it reaches stakeholders. AI amplifies gaps in reasoning if left unchecked. The executive who builds adversarial testing into their personal workflow is the one whose work survives scrutiny.
Weeks 1–4 — Phase 1: Get Your Hands Dirty
Install and run a local AI model. Break it intentionally — feed it false information, ask it to validate wrong numbers, document every failure mode. Build your first prompt library. Wire up a two-agent pipeline: a Writer and a Critic working on your real strategy content.
Weeks 5–10 — Phase 2: Build Your Full AI Team
Expand to a five-agent team. Build RAG memory from your past strategy documents. Develop an adversarial testing habit. Read the foundational papers — not to code, but to understand what your engineers are building. Draft your organization’s AI governance framework from scratch.
Month 3+ — Phase 3: The Leadership Edge
This phase has no fixed end. Read one AI research paper weekly. Run one experiment your team hasn’t tried. Present an AI failure to your leadership quarterly — the rarest leadership trait in AI is honest transparency about where things went wrong.
Track B: From Manager of Builders to Builder of Judgment
Track B is structured around a hard truth: watching your team do demos is not the same as knowing how this works. The judgment you develop from personal use doesn’t transfer from observation.
By the end of 11 weeks, Track B leaders will have personally mastered: effective prompt engineering, AI agent mode, file and document analysis, workflow automation, Slack and communication drafting, Jira and ticket automation, AI evaluation and red-teaming, RAG and knowledge base use, and vibe coding a working prototype — all from direct experience, not a team demo.
The four-element prompt framework at the core of Track B — Role, Context, Task, Format — is deceptively simple. Most software leaders write prompts like search queries. The output quality difference when you invest two extra minutes on role and context is dramatic and immediate.

The Four Ways Leaders Fail at This — and How Not To
1. Learning the tools, not the failure modes. Ask yourself every week: where would this output mislead someone who trusted it without reading it? If you skip adversarial testing, you become a sophisticated user of a dangerous tool.
2. Delegating the experimentation. The moment you ask your team to set up your agents, you’ve failed the exercise. There is no shortcut.
3. Benchmarking against last quarter instead of the frontier. Models and tools are changing monthly. Stay current independently — not through your team’s filtered assessment.
4. Automating before evaluating quality. Run workflows manually several times before automating. The errors you catch will define your evaluation criteria for every AI initiative going forward.
Why Vibe Coding Changes Everything for Software Leaders
Week 11 — the vibe coding week — deserves special attention. Vibe coding means building working software using only natural language prompts, without writing code yourself. Tools like Replit Agent, Lovable, and Cursor make this possible today.
Once you have personally built something real by prompting — a dashboard, a data tracker, a meeting notes formatter — you can no longer be told something is “too complex to automate” or “not ready yet” without understanding exactly what that claim means.
The recommended approach is disciplined: partition the problem into modules, write precise prompts per module, checkpoint progress, and debug by prompting. It treats AI-assisted coding as an engineering process, not a magic trick.
